Panama:
Panama is a pre-Columbian word that means
"abundance of fish, butterflies and trees". Panama City is an exciting
composite of the Old Panama of Spanish conquest complete with 16th and
17th Century historical complexes. Then there is the Colonial Panama
of the 18th and 19th Centuries. And then you discover the ultra-modern
Panama of the 21st Century (a reminder of little Hong Kong). The
busy financial area with over 100 international and local banks is wedged
within five national parks and the "8th wonder of the world", the Panama
Canal, connecting the two great oceans. Renowned as a fun city with
5-star hotels, casinos, night life, and just on the outskirts of the city,
one can explore some of the richest ecosystems on the planet. A paradise
for the sports fisherman, yielding over 180 world fishing records--black
marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, yellow fin tuna, tarpon, amber jack, mahi-mahi,
and more.

Dressed in their "pollera" (the national festival
costume of Panama, which is the most expensive in the world), the
beautiful ladies swing in all directions to the rhythm of the drums, just
like a swarm of bright butterflies wanting to fly up and decorate the sky.
A folkloric show with typical costumes and traditional dances promise
a unique and enjoyable evening. |
Visit
the old city, founded in 1519, and ransacked by the notorious pirate, Henry
Morgan in 1671. A charming spot by the sea where you may wonder down
narrow cobblestone streets and view flowers cascading down from wrought-iron
balconies. The French Park, a monument to the French builders who started
construction of the Panama Canal and the French Embassy are a must to see.
Enjoy the view of Panama City's skyline just behind Colonial architecture,
the entrance of the Canal and the Pacific Ocean, the elevated Bridge of
the Americas, where the big ships pass under to enter into the Canal, and
Panama's up and coming tourist mecca, the Amador Causeway, jetting out
to several islands. Watch the ships being raised within the Miraflores
Locks (about 40 per day) which allows them to cross the 50-mile wide stretch
of land along the Panama Canal, separating the Pacific and the Atlantic
Oceans.

| Taboga
Island Boat Ride, Beach and Lunch: |
|
Taboga, founded in 1515,
is where Francisco Pizarro shoved off to conquer Peru, where pirates laid
the groundwork for Errol Flynn movies, where the artist Paul Gaugin lingered
a while on his way to the South Pacific, where half the steamship trade
of the Pacific West Coast once was based. A 50-minute boat ride takes
you to the Island of Flowers, Taboga, part of the Pearl Archipelago.
This pedestrian haven has all the charm of a small early century town.
The far side of the island has a protected refuge where tens of thousands
of brown pelicans nest every year. Enjoy a day on the beach, boating
and a delightful lunch at the small island's Hotel Taboga. Taboga's
tiny church claims to be second-oldest in the hemisphere. |

 |
Mi Pueblito
(My Little Town): |
| An exact replica of a small Panamanian
indigenous village of 1900. Government offices, shops, a school and a tiny
church surround a cobblestone plaza and water fountain. An excellent restaurant
featuring typical food, a museum, an Afro-Antillean village and dwellings
of the Kuna and Chocoes Indians form a part of Mi Pueblito. |
